(Santiago)

1991 / HOUSE IN SAN ALBERTO /

La Paz, Bolivia

Nothing can be more pleasant than designing a house for one’s own family, since everyday life can be easily interpreted and attended to; Likewise, this early project represented a challenge in terms of capacity and technological contribution.

The house adapts to the peculiarities of the terrain, presenting itself with two different scales: one, a bit present, towards the street; the other, adapted to the terrain and in accordance with the natural balcony that appears on the descending hillside.

The relationship between three determining elements of the terrain: view, sunlight and slope, has achieved the integration of the project with the site. This architectural criterion was peppered with surprise and spontaneity in the journey of a large continuous space.

The house is made up of three clearly differentiated floors distributed in several sub-levels along a rectangular plot with 12 meters of unevenness between the ends. The ceiling plan represents the general composition of the project that suggests a surprising change of directions between the ground floor and a low roof with many folds. The three diagonal axes highlighted by the use of “glass beams” protruding from the roof, go through a succession of intersecting pyramids and culminate in a receptacle of different sizes, allowing the existence of greenhouses inside.

The central skylight has been developed in such a way as to allow the home to be heated with passive solar energy, a system to which only hot air circulation motors are attached. Heat energy is stored in a reservoir on the lower level and then redistributed.

The relationship with this project has marked a path that begins there and enters the present, like a referential beacon. My history as an architect begins with childhood and adolescence spent in this house. Within its walls, its nooks and surprises, a capacity to imagine spaces has been nurtured, to host amazement and cultivate it. To the point that these generated dreams dedicated to architecture. By the time of my university days, I had to analyze the house and understand it from the programmatic decisions and the metaphors that it incorporates, as well as assuming a critical position in relation to its location in the privileged neighborhood of San Alberto and its condition of balcony to a popular neighborhood like Bella Vista. This condition has marked my life and my position around the privileges with which I was born and to which I owe my academic and cultural training. This situation also implies constantly proceeding to review the mandates of architecture and the relationship to the contribution of making fairer societies.

A home is in essence the sum of those experiences, of the sentimental values that it awakens in our memory, and the impacts that a space can have on its inhabitants. Tremendous teaching of a space.
