This was my first encounter with the development of multifamily projects, an area in which I have gained many achievements in the local context.

The difficulty of working a large built mass on a practically square terrain is always conflictive, since the client requests the maximum construction that the norm allows, and the vertical circulations would have to be at the heart of this great mass.

When two separate blocks were proposed, but linked by a bridge and with a single vertical circulation, our clients quickly accommodated to the proposal. In fact, the good result obtained is synonymous of the excellent client-architect communication and connection.

It is necessary to mention that this building appears in the Atlas of America (published by Arquitectura Viva edited by Luis Fernández Galeano). It is a great honor to be cited among the outstanding architects of America.

In the residential area of Calacoto, in La Paz, where embassies were commonly established and there were still large houses of the wealthy class, in the years in which the project was developed there was a trend towards its replacement by multifamily housing buildings. In street blocks not adjacent to the main avenue of the area, the norm allowed only three-story buildings. In the last decade of the state’s economic boom, Calacoto has become one of the most dynamic neighborhoods and is home to large mixed-use buildings.

Two solid and forceful volumes house the entire building mass admissible by the norm, which are linked by a glazed and transparent bridge and a single vertical circulation, thus allowing the existence of a central green courtyard, which brings together the largest portion of the free area of the set and where the building is accessed on a pedestrian basis; reliving the meaning of approaching –as if it were a procession- slowly and through a green and pleasant space to the entrance door.

A smooth and soft material was chosen when working with a special handcrafted brick from the region of Oruro, whose irregular coloration ranges from lilac to brown, and a fairly common filler was used. In this way, the built mass would be responsible for transmitting the message present in the elongated volumes that are slightly articulated to capture more sun and in the deep perforations proposed for continuous fenestrations.
