2013
MIRADOR CABLE CAR TERMINAL STATION (QHANA PATA) – YELLOW LINE
El Alto, Bolivia
The second proposal that our studio developed for a terminal station with a cabin garage was Mirador. This is probably one of the best works achieved by this Architecture Workshop throughout its history, because it ended up being an emblematic proposal, with an important urban impact and landmark condition, the achieved interior scales and its open dialogue with the outer space. The proposed design and the framing of the pixelated colors of the line, became a gesture that has been replicated in many of the stations of the system, giving meaning to a corporate image from the architecture to the company Mi Teleférico, much of that image idea is born in this station. The project was even able to withstand an unexpected connection to the terminal of the silver line very well, both morphologically and internally.
The station as a whole is arranged linearly adjacent to the Panoramic road, with a built complex of large proportions (106 linear meters) accompanying the road with modal interchange lanes that are accommodated along the entire front of the building. The urban renewal of this station occupies about 5,500 m2 without counting the improvement of the roads and modal interchange lanes, which occupies another 1,400 m2.
The volumetry has been conceived as a longitudinal building arranged along the narrow land available for a station of tremendous scale. The original denomination of the sector “Mirador Park” has influenced the existence of urban viewpoints of free accessibility for the population, at surface level rescuing the concept of a viewpoint park; This viewpoint has been worked in the manner of a large urban double-height window (upstairs there is a small cantilevered viewpoint terrace), to precisely reinforce this concept. Likewise, a Viewpoint restaurant for more than one hundred people has been inserted upstairs.
The morphological proposal of the Mirador Park Station comes from an iconic discourse from a long fold of 90 linear meters, as a frame, which contains the pixelated plane (characteristic of the stations, with the range of yellow colors), the public circulation spaces in double height and the exterior viewpoint spaces also in a double height in the open air. All this great fold is suspended by a longitudinal row of concrete pilotis that provide dynamism to the station.
This enormous longitudinal volume has a break that helps in the dialogue of the powerful scale towards the pedestrian and the neighbor who circulates vehicularly.
A very clear reading of the internal uses has been favored through large glazed and free surfaces in double heights. Instead, the Cabin Garage sector has been covered by the typical colors of the stattions.
