COMPETITION OFICINA REGIONAL BANCO SOL
La Paz, Bolivia
We were once again invited to a competition for preliminary projects, this time for Banco Sol. We achieved third place in the competition, and despite not having won, we remain convinced that our risky and high-profile proposals will at some point be taken into account.
The project is located on a lot between buildings on the historic Camacho Avenue, which is part of a heritage complex with rationalist and art nouveau buildings from the beginning of the 20th century, and it is to this context that we have reacted.
We began with this metaphor: A greenhouse that overlooks Camacho Avenue and that allows – due to its transparencies – the city to contemplate a single green and even manage to rethink the Hanging Gardens of antiquity. The skin on Camacho Avenue is defined as a large body that, in its multiplicity of vertical elements following an intercalated rhythm, generates a notion of texture and weave that does not draw anything on the façade and rather relies on the idea of a very transparent texture that allows a glimpse of the vegetation inside the greenhouse.
We proposed a spatiality based on the idea of excavating the volume through light, which allows an important concept which is that of a fissure as a visual link and urban window between the Marina Núñez del Prado Passage (PMNP) and Av. Camacho. In such a way that the user, being in the passage, can look through the windows that face the PMNP, and piercing the building with his gaze, can sense and glimpse the facades of the buildings that are on the uphill lane of Av. Camacho. In this way, a large empty space is generated that functions as a bridge between the circulation cores and the functional spaces of offices, agencies and cultural areas. For this reason, a system of glass stairs and circulation corridors, also translucent-transparent, have been thought of, which, anchored to a metal structure, configure a large environment that in a unitary way sends light from the roofs to the ground floor and the basements.
It has also been decided to take a critical stance regarding the foundations of the buildings on Av. Camacho, considering that the solidity that emanates from its typology contributes to maintaining it as a passage route and that it does not harbor the possibility of stopping the gaze to exercise contemplation. By sinking the foundation 2.7 meters towards the interior of the property and proposing a cantilevered greenhouse as the main object of the proposal towards Av. Camacho, the typical access canopy to these buildings is reversed and a scale and shelter is given to the user that the other bank branches and buildings in the urban complex do not have.
This gesture of giving space on the ground floor to the city is part of one of the positions that the Studio handles in relation to urban ethics: “if the city wins, you win.” This postulate – almost a mantra – is defined by the idea of proposing environments and architectures that in their act of generosity speak of the deep connections of the discipline with environmental, human and cultural ethics.
